Launch of European Innovation Council EIC
On 18 March, the European Commission launched the European Innovation Council (EIC). The EIC is part of Horizon Europe, the new and Europe’s largest grant programme ever to boost innovations. The €10 billion budget clearly shows the huge ambitions.

European Innovation Council (EIC)
From the Horizon 2020 programme, predecessor of Horizon Europe, we were familiar with the SME scheme. The recently introduced EIC instruments are meant as a replacement for this programme. The EIC is specifically aimed at entrepreneurs who wish to invest in the realisation of breakthrough technologies. A total budget of € 10 billion has been made available for the programme that will run from 2021 to 2027.
Three instruments
The European Innovation Council (EIC) programme offers three instruments, each of which focusses on a specific component of the innovation chain, expressed as Technology Readiness Levels (TRL).
- EIC Pathfinder - Development of high-quality new ideas for emerging breakthrough technologies
- EIC Transition Activities – Conversion of research into innovation
- EIC Accelerator - Market introduction of new innovations.
The application procedure can be initiated all through the year.
