The largest funding programmes explained: 

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the biggest research and innovation program of Europe: €95.5 billion euro is available for the best research and innovation projects in Europe for the period 2021-2027. Horizon Europe builds on top of the successes of Horizon 2020, with more attention to open science, equality, interdisciplinary research and practical applications.

Three pillars are defined within the programme, providing funding for excellent science, global challenges and industrial competitiveness and innovative Europe. In general it is developed to strengthen the European research & innovation potential. Within Horizon Europe there are many Work Programmes defined that address climate change, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boost the EU’s competitiveness and growth through various topics.

LIFE

LIFE is the programme dedicated to both Environment and Climate Action. The € 5.4 billion budget is allocated for the mission to protect our environment and mitigate climate change. It covers the sub-programmes Nature and Biodiversity, Circular Economy and Quality of Life, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaption and Clean Energy Transition (CET). Projects that make a clear impact for either the environment our climate and fit within the EU policies (e.g. the Green Deal) qualify for this instrument.

Interreg

The Interreg programme supports and stimulates interregional cooperation among regions in Europe. One of its main targets is to diminish the influence of national borders in favour of equal economic, social and cultural development of the whole territory of the European Union and to increase cooperation between member states. Within Interreg different regions are defined for two or more member states. Each programme has its own focus area, addressing important themes such as climate adaptation, water management, renewable energy, circular economy and innovation. For the period 2021 – 2027 the budget is set at € 8 billion.

Eurostars

Eurostars supports international innovative projects led by R&D performing SME. With its bottom-up approach, Eurostars supports the development of rapidly marketable innovative products, processes and services that help improve the daily lives of people around the world. It is an ideal first step in international cooperation, enabling small businesses to combine and share expertise and benefit from working beyond national borders.
